In the Flood: An Original by Annah Newton

This hurricane season has hit home to me in so many ways and my heart has ached these last few weeks. As I was on the way home from doing yet another pre-hurricane grocery-run in my rural North-Central town, I saw all the people evacuating from down south and my heart felt like it could explode. There was a song that was begging to be written and a story that needed to be heard.

So this is "In the Flood." Unfiltered, unedited, and horribly recorded, but from a heavy and honest heart all the same. No judgement please, I don't usually share my music unless it is perfected. But if this imperfect song can give encouragement or make someone feel seen, I'll gladly share it.

This is a song about hurricanes (and how much they suck) and the one who is always with us. I hope you enjoy and for those of you down here in Florida, hunker down and stay safe. 🫶

Lyrics:
My thoughts are lost in the rubble
Our yards fine but they lost their mother
What do we do now? Oh, what do we do now?
Couple taken before their time
They went home with their arms intertwined
What do we do now? Oh, what do we do now?

The only way to keep my head above water
is to make sure that my knees don't leave the ground
When the waters rise and I don't know where to run
I'll put my knees down in that mud cause I know you're with me in the flood, in the flood

My vision's stuck in North Carolina
Where the waters and the deaths rose higher
What do they do now? What do they do now?
My heart aches for that Gulf Coast
Whose towns now all look like ghosts
How do they recover? Especially with another?

The only way to keep my head above water
is to make sure that my knees don't leave the ground
When the waters rise and I don't know where to run
I'll put my knees down in that mud cause I know you're with me in the flood, in the flood

Grab the gas cans and fill your tub
Hunker down with those you love
Pack the car but pray you'll stay
If you can, please drive far away
Wind and water's pretty powerful
So I beg you to be careful
But even wind and water
Bow down to Him who's stronger
But even wind and water
Bow down to Him who's stronger

The only way to keep my head above water
is to make sure that my knees don't leave the ground
When the waters rise and I don't know where to run
I'll put my knees down in that mud cause I know you're with me in the flood, in the flood
I'll put my knees down in that mud cause I know you're with me in the flood
