Kalighat Temple is a sacred place. Since it is the 52 Shakti Peetha of India, where according to the legends the toes of the right foot of Sati fell. It is believed that Goddess Sati, failed to bear the insult of her husband God Shiva and immolated herself on the Homa. Shiva was so much upset that he started dancing with the body of Sati frantically and performed the dance of destruction across the universe. Other gods tried to dissuade Shiva and Vishnu with his disk cut through Satis corpse. One part of Satis body fell at Kalighat, kolkata and became Shakti Peetha.
