Dsquared2 denim review:

There has been a trend in men’s fashion towards a more minimal look the past few years. Many designers, most notably Saint Laurent, have opted for a more plain denim with a very tapered fit. A lot of people like this minimal look and it has become very popular in the streetwear scene. Dsquared2 hasn’t done that though. Dsquared2 has always been known for their denim with excessive rips and distressing and shows no sign of changing that in favour of trends.

These jeans perfectly sum up what Dsquared2 does so well. The paint and distressing on these pants is over the top to say the least. When I first saw these online I though “no one is going to buy these”. That quickly changed when I saw them in person. The paint and distressing really draws the eye, you can’t not look at them. The paint is applied in layers to create a gradient effect almost. This adds depth and feels more natural than if it was just one coat which would create a stark contrast. There is also a bit of asymmetry to the paint. While both sides have paint in the same places, the size, shape, and layering is different. You may think this is just because some person randomly applied paint, but no. If you look at 2 pairs of pants they will have the same paint and rips in the same places. Which leads me to the rips. As crazy as the jeans are, the rips don’t seem out there in terms of ridiculousness. Every rip feels like it should be there, all very natural placement in terms of where you would expect your jeans to be worn out.

As great as the pattern is, the fit just isn’t for me. These are the “cool guy” fit, which has a 24cm rise. I’ve had hem tailored since to shorten the rise, but even so the fit is just…off for me. I’ve had other people try these on and it fits well, so it’s really just a personal problem. The slim jean is the one most people are familiar with. With a lower rise the slim jean fits a lot better. If you are used to a super tapered Saint Laurent you may want to check out the “Clement” fit which is even tighter. These paint jeans did exist in a slim fit with a normal rise, but I never saw them anywhere except for a random little shop in Sweden.

That’s not to say these jeans are not tapered. The hem is 16.5cm which is a pretty standard taper for most pants right now (although this was outrageously slim at the time I got them 5 years ago). My one mistake was getting denim that did not have a 2% stretch to them. With 100% cotton they just get loose over time. Nothing you can really do about it. The fabric itself is quite nice though. There is a nice weave and colour to the denim which lends itself to being painted with the white. The colour creates a nice contrast which brings out the paint even further.

The chain is another neat feature. Engraved with “Dsquared2” the shiny metal just adds one more piece of detail to catch the eye. You don’t notice it at first because the paint is so loud, it’s really more of a secondary feature that adds to the pant. The chain is connected to the leather logo patch on the backside and cannot be removed. The chain is quite long so you can hang it from whatever pocket you want, but it does come unraveled quite easily if you do not tie it well.

So, what do you wear these with? Well it really depends how you want to dress them. The more casual Gucci boots from last week are my usual. Black, blue, or maroon shoes would look great as well. Even though the paint is so noticeable, the underlying blue is a great medium dark shade that goes well with a lot of stuff. I think these really look better casually, but if you want to throw them on with a blazer it wouldn’t be ridiculous as long as it’s a more trendy jacket. As long as you have nice shoes it really doesn’t matter.

Would I buy these again? No, probably not. The fit is not for me personally, and I prefer a 2% stretch. That doesn’t mean these aren’t cool though. I still love the paint, detail, and the overall look. It’s just the previously mentioned factors that stop me. If that doesn’t bother you check around on eBay as I’ve seen them come up every now and then.
