The song, “I Will Walk with Jesus,” has an interesting back story. You may not know that the author and composer, Steve Schank, submitted it at the last minute for consideration.

In 2019, the Primary general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints requested submissions for a new song to capture the essence of the new Children and Youth program. Schank is on the Church’s Sacred Music Committee and thought about writing something. Then a meeting came up to review the submissions.

“I thought, ‘Oh, I never did that. Well, I’ve got an hour and a half. Maybe I could just write some things out.’”

His lyrics and then his music were placed with the rest in the stack and ended up being chosen.

The song was first performed in November 2019, then included in a 2021 Friend to Friend, and has now been included in the Church’s new global hymnbook, “Hymns — For Home and Church.”

“It was my privilege to kind of blindly submit some thoughts and some inspired feelings that now have become a blessing, hopefully, to many members throughout the Church.”

The song was recently sung in October 2024 general conference.
