Home Brew by U Chapter 3 - Specialty Grains and Beer Wort

In Chapter 2, we looked at everything that comes in your beer brewing kit. Now, let's start making some beer and we'll begin with making beer wort.

In a big stainless steel pot, begin heating 3 gallons of water to 155-165 degrees. Pour your specialty grains into a muslin bag, and and when the water is at temperature, drop the bag into the pot. You've basically made a big "tea bag." The grains add coloring and malt "back-bone" to your beer.

Steep (soak) the grains for about 15-20 minutes, and then remove the muslin bag from the pot. Pour additional water, via a strainer, over the grains to get the last bit of color and sugars from the grains.

Now its time to bring the wort to a boil. Once you reach boiling, remove the pot from the heat source and add your liquid malt extract (LME) or dry malt extract (DME). You don this off the heat source so as not to risk "burning your beer."

Put the pot back on the burner and bring the wort to a boil. Keep an eye on the boiling temperature, making sure that it doesn't boil over. Boil for about an hour. At the end of an hour, you'll add the hops, but we'll review that step in Chapter 4.

A Quick Review of Specialty Grains and Making Beer Wort

Bring 3 gallons of water to 155-165 degrees
Place specialty grains in a muslin bag
Steep the grains for 15-20 minutes
Bring water to a near boil
Add liquid or dry malt extract
Boil for 1 hour
