This is the video recording for Lesson 5 of the English Foundations Program, which focuses on Step 5 in the Literary Analysis Process - Narrative Voice. Ray Bradbury's short story is the focus text for this lesson. Bradbury's dystopian narrative is a current HSC Standard text on the syllabus for Module C: Craft of Writing.

In this lesson, we cover:
Relevant aspects of Step 3 and 4 - Textual Form and Language Style following on from the previous two lessons, paying attention to the conventions of science fiction, dystopian fiction, satire and the short story form. Dr Ando introduces how Bradbury's chosen textual form and language style shape the characterisation, imagery, key ideas, and dialogue in the narrative.

Dr Ando introduces Step 5 in the Literary Analysis Process - Narrative Voice. The reading task for this week is the "Literary Analysis in 10 Steps - Narrative Voice" PDF, which introduces students to a variety of different types of narrative voice, going beyond the three basic types of first, second and third person narration. These different forms include homodiegetic, autodiegetic, heterodiegetic, close third person, and omniscient narration, and we also touch on other narrative modes including stream of consciousness, frame narrators, epistolary, and multiple perspective narratives.

We read Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" and applied relevant aspects of the 10 Step Analysis Process to the text. Dr Ando explains how Bradbury's context, purpose, audience and values shaped the narrative, and we focused particularly on how Bradbury uses characterisation, the setting, figurative language, tone, mood, symbolism, and dialogue to critique the use of technology as a vehicle for social control and manipulation.

Dr Ando introduces the two writing tasks for this lesson. Students can choose to write an analytical body paragraph using the provided scaffold in the "Body Paragraph Structure - Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian" PDF, and / or a creative and reflective task in the "Creative Writing & Reflection - Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian" PDF.

Students have the opportunity to submit their responses for written feedback in a shared Google document.

All of these resources are on offer in the English Foundations Program portal, as well as plenty of supporting resources that students can use to help them develop a stronger understanding of the narrative and to compose their responses.
