Is your little one over 12 months of age and still not responding to their name?!

This video is for you!!

Help your little one make the correlation between the word (their name) and themselves!
How do we do this?!

Step 1) LIMIT the amount of times you say the child's name for approximately 3-5 days.
Do NOT say their name over and over again to see if they will look and do not use it when they are in trouble! (use a command or action instead - for example if your child is jumping on the couch - instead of saying "Jacob! Stop jumping!" Simply provide the word for the action that you want them to do such as "Sit down" using a melodic voice and MODEL sitting down on the couch and then reward with "Good job sitting!") - side not tangent: often times kid's hear the words that we do NOT want them to do such as "Stop jumping!" and they hear "jump!" and so they do.... using this positive modeling and simple word response will help decrease the unwanted behaviors (i.e. sitting down on the couch!)

Step 2) Set your timer for a "work" period - I recommend 10 minutes, 5 times per day for parents.
Use this time to really focus your attention and hone in on the skills you're trying to improve!

Step 3) Say your child's name using LOUD, QUIET (whisper), SING-SONGY (melodic) approaches while implementing positive reinforcements (cookies, etc) / natural consequences that your child ENJOYS (bath time, social games, giddy up horsey, etc)

Step 4) REPEAT multiple times during the "Session" that you created *Should be FUN! Creating a positive correlation between their name and the reward!

Step 5) Practice every day for 2 weeks! YOU CAN DO IT! Track how many times they respond (maybe 0 on day 1.... 2 on day 4.... 6 on day 10) Hang in there!!! Any progress or response is positive!

Other ideas: Use incentives such as music (alexa), a bell, siri, etc

For kids with receptive language delays:
Put a picture of them and one of you (or sis or dad or brother) on the fridge or wall and then ask "Who Wants Cookie?!" Then practice helping them POINT to themselves while you say their name (example: "Who wants cookie?! "SHAY?! (point to picture) or MOMMY (point to picture) reply to yourself: "ohhh! MOMMY!" *eat the cookie* repeat with Shay. Then after 10 attempts, HOLD (WAIT) for the response from your child - if they do not respond, help them by hand over hand helping them point - and model the word again "SHAY! EAT COOKIE!"

Remember to use simple language!
