One of the reasons we decided to go to the Ark later in the year this year was because we were hoping to see more of this next animal, the red panda. During our visit last year it was extremely hot and the adorable panda couple, Lily and whatshisname, were almost completely lethargic. We were hoping for better things this year, and as you can see we obviously made the right choice. :-)

This is a relatively new breeding pair at the Ark, they arrived early last summer. The adorable Lily came from Chester Zoo in England and the male the Ark hoped she would accept as her mate came from Högholmen in Finland. The two got along very well and in late June this year Lily gave birth to twins. :-) We were hoping to see the cubs too, but, alas, we were a little too early. Lily was still keeping them tucked away safely in one of the dens around the enclosure.

The Ark has kept red pandas for many years and has succeeded very well in breeding them. We were thrilled to see so much of them this year. They are so adorable that they hardly look real. :-)

The red panda is native to parts of the Himalayas, China and Burma. They are under threat mainly from habitat destruction. Their red list status is Vulnerable.
