Former Leaf and current Red Wing James van Riemsdyk joined Nick Alberga & Jay Rosehill for an in-depth conversation. JVR kicked things off by discussing his patented between-the-legs goal against James Reimer on Sunday night, a goalie he once teamed up with in Toronto, and what it was like facing him as an opponent. The conversation then shifted to van Riemsdyk’s strong season in Detroit, with the 36-year-old on pace for 20+ goals as the Wings sit second in the Atlantic Division.

JVR shared what’s clicked for both himself and the Red Wings, the tight race in the Eastern Conference, and whether he finds himself scoreboard watching as teams in the division have been on a heater over the past month. He also reflected on the Toronto spotlight, how it helped shape him as a player, the passion of the market, and how much he loved being a Maple Leaf.

The guys also touched on Auston Matthews’ dominance and when JVR knew Matthews was going to be special, William Nylander’s style and swagger — including recently walking into a game dressed as Batman for his kid’s birthday — and Scott Laughton’s importance in the room. JVR closed by sharing what it was like playing with Laughton in Philadelphia and why the two remain close friends to this day.
