What may sound like a niche crime has become a costly reality for Pokémon collectors across Texas. Throughout 2025, police reports and media coverage documented a rise in targeted thefts involving rare and graded Pokémon cards, many worth tens of thousands of dollars. Thieves focused on sealed boxes, premium sets, and vintage cards that can be quickly resold and are difficult to trace.

In the Houston area, several incidents were reported near the end of the year. A homeowner in Spring told FOX 26 that burglars kicked in his door while he was away and stole hundreds of sealed Pokémon Prismatic Evolutions boxes, resulting in losses exceeding $55,000. Days later, R.E.V. Collectibles in Cypress was burglarized for the second time in 2025, with thieves stealing high-end Pokémon products and causing an estimated $30,000 in losses, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Similar cases were reported elsewhere in Texas. In June, a trading card shop in Killeen lost an estimated $100,000 in rare Pokémon cards and cash during a break-in. In Amarillo, a grand jury indicted a man accused of stealing about $30,000 worth of sports and Pokémon cards.

As the resale market for collectibles continues to grow, collectors and small business owners say the losses go beyond money. Rare cards can take years to acquire and are often nearly impossible to recover once stolen.
