In 1977 The Black Messengers won a made for TV talent competition called The Gong Show. Chuck Barris, the shows host, asked the Messengers back a second time to compete in 78, which they also won. They were also asked to perform on a show also by Chuck Barris called "The Raw Raw Show". They appeared on these shows under the name of The Mechanical Devices.
