Описание к видео Project vs. Operations: Understanding the Difference

Understanding the Core Concepts: Project vs. Operations
This video aims to clarify the fundamental distinction between a project and an operation, which is a crucial concept in project management.
What is a Project? A project is defined by several key characteristics:
• Temporary Nature: It lasts only temporarily, meaning it has a specific start when the work begins and a defined end when all the work is set to be completed.
• Unique Output: Projects create a unique product, service, or result that did not exist before the commencement of the project.
• Goal-Oriented and Planned: Projects are a coordinated set of activities done with some goal in mind and with a defined plan to follow.
Examples of Projects:
• The construction of a building is considered a project because it starts when there is no structure and ends when the building is fully constructed.
• Building a website from scratch, including creating content, putting it on web pages, and finally posting it onto the internet, is an example of a project.
• The work involved in creating a unique car design, from the initial idea to the drawing board and finally putting it into production, is considered a project.
What is an Operation (and what is NOT a Project)? Understanding what is not a project can help clarify what a project is. Activities that are considered operations include:
• Continuously Ongoing: Activities that are continuously ongoing without a defined start and an end.
• Repetitive Results: Those activities which create the same result again and again are not projects.
Examples of Operations:
• The subsequent maintenance and support of a website after it's built are considered operations.
• Car manufacturing is an example of an operation because there is no specific start or defined end to the process, and the same car model gets manufactured continuously, like a million other models before it. The actual manufacturing on an assembly line after the design phase is considered operations.
Project Termination: It's important to note that projects can sometimes end prematurely even before the final product or service is delivered. This can happen due to various reasons, such as a lack of budget to keep the project going or the loss of support from a key stakeholder.
