The wood sandpiper is a small wader. It resembles a longer-legged and more delicate green or solitary sandpiper with a short fine bill, brown back and longer yellowish legs. This bird is usually found on freshwater during migration and wintering. They forage by probing in shallow water or on wet mud, and mainly eat insects and similar small prey. It nests on the ground or uses an abandoned old tree nest of another bird, such as the fieldfare. Four pale green eggs are laid between March and May. Adults and immatures which accumulate fuel loads of 50% of their lean body mass can potentially cross distances up to 4400 kilometers in one non-stop flight. They are so fun to watch as they run down the beach with a receding wave and run back up the beach with next incoming wave.
