Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says while Australia is willing to engage in peaceful discussion with Chinese authorities it is not prepared to compromise its national interests in an effort to settle trade relations between the two nations.

He pointed out China had been a significant economic ally for Australia, as well as an important trading partner.

“At the same time Australia’s national interests are non-negotiable, whether they are national security interests or national economic interests,” he said.

“Australia will also continue to speak publicly about human rights issues as appropriate.

“We will not negotiate on our national interests, it goes to the very heart of the Australian identity, but we are willing to engage in a respectful and mutually beneficial dialogue with the Chinese leadership.”
