Three panels formed to assess extent of damage

Three special committees comprising officials from the State government, district administration and institutions with technical expertise have been asked to assess the extent of damage to the Veeravasantharayar Mandapam which was destroyed in fire at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Wednesday.

told reporters that all departments concerned have taken stock of the fire and subsequent loss at the eastern wing of the temple on February 2 spread over 7,000 square feet. Parts of the ceiling and pillars came crashing down due to the heat.

The eastern entrance has been cordoned off.

A 12-member technical team with engineers from Public Works Department, Archaeological Survey of India, Indian Institute of Technology and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department will assess the structural stability at the mandapam. Reconstruction of the hall will be discussed.

“Some members have visited the premises to study the situation and preliminary investigations are on. The technical team will advise us on structural damages to sculptures, ornate idols and ceiling. The reconstruction will begin as soon as debris are cleared,” he said.

The second team will provide support to members clearing destructed part of the temple premises. Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services personnel will oversee the clearance and ensure that no injury or loss to life is caused during this damage control period.

Since the roof continues to be a hazard and its removal is risky, Saravana Kumar, Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue Services, said that support would be provided to those working on reconstructing the pillars of the mandapam.

“Members of the temple administration, TANGEDCO, Corporation, HR and CE, police and Revenue Department are part of this team,” said Mr. Rao.

The fire has been a wake up call to officials of all departments concerned. It has reiterated the need to review disaster management measures in places of public importance. To understand the status of fire safety measures in the temple premises, a ‘Fire and Rescue Audit’ will be held by another special team. The audit is to begin on February 8, said the Collector.

He added that the 1000 pillar hall, the golden chariot and the Pasupatheswarar mandapam remain intact. They have not been able to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
