A proton is a fundamental building block of matter.

It has a positive charge, mass, and an uud quark composition.

The proton's history began with early atomic theories but was revolutionized in 1911 when Ernest Rutherford discovered the atomic nucleus. Between 1914 and 1919, Rutherford identified the proton as a fundamental particle within this nucleus through his nitrogen gas experiments. The 1930s further clarified the proton's role alongside neutrons, discovered by James Chadwick. The 1960s quark model by Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig revealed that protons are composed of three quarks held together by the strong nuclear force.
