Описание к видео Zapotec - Berelele Music For The Rainy Season Recorded at Juchitan, Oaxaca State Native Americans

Berelele music for the rainy season (Zapotec), recorded at Juchitan, Oaxaca state.

The state of Oaxaca has the greatest density of Indian population in Mexico.
The Zapotecs, the most numerous (300,000), speak a language unrelated either to
Maya or Nahua. The evangelizing of the Zapotecs was actively, carried out from
the end of the 16th century, in particular because they themselves, anxious for
protection from their Aztec and Mixtec enemies, let the Spanish know that they
wished to become Christians. In the southern partof the state, however, a Zapotec
minority stayed aloof from European influence and was able to preserve agrarian
myths and rites of great antiquity. This piece comes from this area. It is performed
by a family (the father and two sons) on a bamboo flute, an ayotl and a two-skinned
drum. The ayotl, a tortoise shell, was a ceremonial instrument widly in use before the
conquest, particularly favored by the Maya. It is hung by a ribbon from the neck of
the perormer, who skins is found more-or-less throughout Mexico, inherited from the
Spanish soldiers whose music had impressed the conquered peoples. The flute alternates
a measured melody with freer sequences including glissandos like the bird song heard
at the beginning of the rainy season.
