Retro Bowl: How to go Undefeated your First Season on Extreme Difficulty

How to successfully Draft, manage and play your way to an undefeated first season on extreme!

Starting from scratch on extreme can be a very difficult feat in Retro Bowl. Here I have outlined key decisions to help you be more successful when taking on this EXTREME challenge.

1. Make sure your new save provides a roster that will trade out for at least three second round picks! This means when you start a new save, before playing your first game, check the roster and ensure there are three 2-Star players on the roster. Also, make sure none of the players are retiring or at the end oof their contracts in year 1. If they don’t meet this criteria, delete the save and start a new one.

2. Play your first game. There are two ways to go about this part. A: Play it on extreme to get used to the gameplay, but risk taking a loss. A loss in year one will decrease your fan rating, making it a steeper slope to climb come your first year as head coach (y2). B: play year one game on lower difficulty to ensure a win and start with a higher fan rating. This will start your fan rating higher, but also place higher expectations on you from your fans! So, losing in year two could have a harsher impact to your rating. We plan to go undefeated though. So, go out and win em all.

3. Transition to year 2 before you make any trades. Once you’ve started the next season, you’ll see “draft” instead of “continue” on the bottom right of your Home Screen. Go to your “roster” instead of clicking draft and trade out your entire roster for draft picks BEFORE your draft. So long as you followed step one, this will provide you with at least one 1st round pick and four 2nd round picks.

4. Draft the best defensive players available in your first three picks. Then prioritize your WRs and QB. Finally, draft a RB, TE or K. I like to have a kicker in case we are short on time and have too much field to cover before half or endgame. I’ve had success without a kicker too though. So, no strict rules on what to choose in round three. Just be sure you have at least QB, WR, WR on your offense and three D players!

5. Time to play ball! Make sure you’re NOT trying to make big plays with your rookies. Keep your gameplay short and simple. Short tosses to your receivers and diving or getting OB before the defense tackles you will limit your fumbles. If you try to make plays with weak rookies on extreme, you WILL fumble A LOT. Like multiple times per game a lot. So just grind out the short plays and get your touchdowns.

6. Accumulate CCs through your year by making smart coaching decisions. Criticize players that can afford the morale hit instead of spending CCs to keep them boosted. Your insane win streak you’ve embarked on will keep them from toxic.

7. Prioritize your CC spending on rehab facilities and a defensive coordinator. Look to get yourself a 3.5-5S Defensive coordinator with a trait (preferably physio or talent spotter trait). If your team morale is looking weak, you can also invest in your training facility to give that a boost and help players level up more quickly. Try to keep some CCs in reserve for end of season in case you need to scoop up a free agent for the post season. DO NOT waste CCs on player meetings or your stadium. Your wins will take care of fan rating and training facilities are a better investment to help morale. Rehab facilities will help condition (so don’t meet with team or players to boost condition).

8. Take home the RB trophy champ!
