The main theme from Chariots of Fire, composed my Vangelis, was an instant hit and is now one of the most well-known film themes around. Some may argue that the synthesiser sound was a wrong fit for the film, or that 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' should have won the music Oscar that year; but there's no denying that this opening scene of barefoot running along a beach is a moment of movie magic that we don't get to see too often.

Filmed in St Andrew, Scotland. Directed by Hugh Hudson, written by Colin Welland. Starring Ian Charleson, Ben Cross and Nigel Havers. Music by Vangelis.
