Basilicas of King Saint Louis "San Luigi dei Francesi" and of Saint Augustine

Описание к видео Basilicas of King Saint Louis "San Luigi dei Francesi" and of Saint Augustine

The two Roman churches "San Luigi dei Francesi" (King Saint Louis) and "Sant'Agostino" (Saint Augustine) both have one thing in common: besides being situated nearby to each other in the area known as "Campo Marzio", they also both have paintings by the famous Renaissance artist Caravaggio.

The church of "San Luigi dei Francesi" as we see it today was built between the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century. The work was carried out by Domenico Fontana on a project of Giacomo della Porta.

The Contarelli chapel in the left nave was decorated with a cycle of three paintings by Caravaggio, which depict three scenes from the life of Saint Matthew Apostle and Evangelist: the calling of Matthew, the writing of the gospel, and the martyrdom.

The Saint Cecilia chapel has frescoes by Domenichino and a painting by Guido Reni which is a copy of the Saint Cecilia by Raphael.

The basilica of Saint Augustine has the painting "Our Lady of Pilgrims" by Caravaggio, and the mortal remians of Saint Monica are kept under the main altar of the chapel dedicated to her.
