Описание к видео Is it worth upgrading to an 8K television? ++PART REPLAY++

(11 Jan 2019) LEADIN:
Despite the consumer scepticism, tech giants are this year throwing their weight behind 8K televisions, unveiling the biggest screens we've ever seen at CES.
Manufacturers are deploying what they claim is the most cutting edge technology, but is it enough to tempt people to upgrade.
STORYLINE:
"I'm thrilled to introduce our brand new 98 inch QLED  8K"
Samsung was first out of the starting gate with their 8K televisions last October, but this year it's about bigger screens. This offering from Samsung is 98 inches, almost two and a half metres.
The industry is also hoping to tempt buyers with better picture quality supported by ever more sophisticated technology.
Samsung's Andrew Sivori tells CES: "Micro LED offers the best picture quality available. Period."
It's a battle of the beasts here, with Sony also announcing it will release its own 98 inch 8K television.
LG Electronics is also releasing a 98 incher, but the focus is on their new foldable 65-inch 4K television.
The idea of 8K is that if you sit at the right distance from them you can really enjoy the immersive nature of the new televisions.
From CES it would appear that 8K was landing soon at a high street near you, but Roger Cheng, executive editor of the technology website CNET says that's not the case:
"A lot of the hype around TV, like there's a lot of discussion about 8K. We've had a discussion about 8K. It is not really something that is relevant to consumers now, or even for a few years. But it's still a big buzzword. That's what CES is all about," says Cheng.
Although companies like Netflix are investing in 4K content no one is producing 8K content.
Nicole Scott, editor of Mobile Geeks tech website says: "One of the only reasons I think that consumers should look at 8K TVs is that you keep your TV for a really long time. So if you need to pick up a TV this year, and you want to keep it for five to ten years, you'll want the 8K feature when there is finally 8K content."
According to Paul Gray, the Research and Analysis Director at IHS Markit, says there is a noticeable step up in picture quality: "You have sixteen times the number of pixels in 8K and that is a lot more information and the whole appeal of 8K is that you're presenting the viewer with more information that you can do to make it look more sharp, or indeed, a wider field of vision."
The only reason to have an 8K television though is to play 8K programmes and video, but that could take could take much longer and by the time it does arrive the televisions may  be cheaper.
According to Gray: "The first question is are you going to get any 8K content and if you live outside Japan then, for the time being forget it. No broadcaster, outside of Japan has any plan to go to 8K. End of story."
Japanese broadcaster NHK is planning a massive upgrade in coverage for the 2020 Olympics, but it might be one of the few big events that make it to 8K.
Fully aware of the shortage of 8K content, the television companies are using different forms of technology to scale up the quality of existing content made in 4K and Full High Definition.
Professor John Greenwood at University College London is an experimental psychologist and studies how our brains process the displays. The best focus is what is at the centre of the eye, the area marked in red on this brain scan shown on the computer screen.
The green areas are bigger and represent our peripheral vision.
Seeing a scaled up picture on 8K is not the same as watching true 8K content.
Broadcasters wont be upgrading if they can't easily get recording equipment for the standard required.
