The "Rats of Tobruk" Held for 5 Months Against Rommel's Best Forces Ordered to hold Tobruk for just 8 weeks to buy time for Egypt's defense, General Morshead's Australians held for 241 days. They endured daily artillery bombardment, constant air attacks, and repeated infantry assaults, earning the nickname "Rats of Tobruk" from German propaganda—a title they proudly adopted as a badge of honor.

The siege tied down elite German units and prevented Rommel from advancing on the Suez Canal, arguably saving Egypt from capture in 1941.
