His name was Carol Shelby and high performance was his business. It was evident in everything he touched from the early Mustangs right up to the late models. If you think his later work was somehow softer, cars like this slick 480 actual mile 2009 GT-500KR will be happy to prove you wrong.

With its bulging fenders and crisp lines, the design plays well into the current trend of nostalgic design and appeals to just about everyone who sees one. This low-mileage GT500KR takes those crowd-pleasing traits and wraps them in the very color that Mustangs arguably wear best -- bright red. Looking over the body, it's obvious the previous owner had this car tucked away somewhere for safe keeping. The paintwork is glossy and there isn't a single problem area to be found. Accented by thick silver stripes along the top and a matching strip along the rocker panel, the package hearkens back to the Shelby's of yore.

On this generation KR, the Shelby camp only followed two adjectives -- "aggressive" and "exclusive". The chin spoiler, mirror covers and hood are all pure carbon fiber while other accent pieces such as the hood pins and gas cap are exclusive to the KR. Shelby requires a core for any new KR pieces they sell, so you'll never find a V6 Mustang wearing the same pieces.

Under the hood, Shelby's racing heritage carries on in the form of a 540hp supercharged V8. The foundation is an iron 5.4L block with a forged steel crank, forged steel connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, aluminum heads and dual overhead camshafts. Topped off by an Eaton M122 pumping out 10-12psi worth of boost, the car sounds incredible and makes more than enough power to keep any enthusiast happy. The bay is badged and serialized, verifying that this is the 493rd KR built for the 2009 model year.

Behind the 5.4, a a Tremec six-speed allows the driver to select gears quickly and efficiently thanks to close gear ratios and short throws while a rear differential packed with 3.73 gears ensures quick launches and reasonable highway cruising. The suspension is KR-exclusive with special spring rates, dampers, stabilizer bars and a massive strut tower. Braking is equally impressive with Brembo 4-piston calipers up front and 2-piston Ford calipers, clamping down on large discs all around. Connecting the chassis to the road is a set of 18-inch forged Alcoa wheels wrapped in sticky Goodyear tires developed especially for the car.

Inside, you'll find a daily-driver friendly black leather interior complete with Shelby signature bucket seats, a great looking dash with graphite-face gauges, and all the modern amenities you'd expect from a new car. The air conditioning blows cold and the Shaker sound system has an impressive thump making this a great cabin to spend your time in.

Even without the rarity factor, this would be Mustang worthy of any performance enthusiast. With plenty of power across the board and nearly universal appeal, it's hard to think of a more desirable American car in this price range. Add in the Shelby name, limited production and staggering low 480 original miles and this thoroughbred starts looking like a great investment.
