Basal body temperature and ovulation when charting your fertility

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) tracking is a method used by many women to monitor their menstrual cycles and predict ovulation. In this video we'll go through how basal body temperature can indicate ovulation.

Baseline Measurement

Basal Body Temperature is your body's resting temperature, usually measured first thing in the morning before any physical activity, even before getting out of bed. This baseline temperature is affected by hormonal changes throughout your menstrual cycle.

Menstrual Cycle Phases

The menstrual cycle consists of two main phases: the follicular phase (before ovulation) and the luteal phase (after ovulation).

Temperature Changes

During the follicular phase, under the influence of estrogen, BBT tends to be lower. As ovulation approaches, estrogen levels rise, causing a dip in temperature known as the "estrogenic dip."

Ovulation

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from your ovary. After ovulation, the ruptured follicle transforms into a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone.

Progesterone Effect

Progesterone causes a rise in BBT. This post-ovulatory temperature increase is known as the "thermal shift." The rise is typically around 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.3 to 0.6 degrees Celsius) and is sustained throughout the luteal phase.

Confirmation of Ovulation

A sustained temperature increase over several days can serve as confirmation that ovulation has occurred. This is a key aspect of BBT charting, and the day of the temperature rise is often considered the day of ovulation.

Charting and Patterns

BBT charting involves recording daily temperatures on a graph or using a fertility tracking app. Ovulation can be identified by observing a distinct pattern: a lower range of temperatures before ovulation and a higher range after.

Predicting Fertility

By tracking BBT over several menstrual cycles, you can identify your unique patterns and predict your fertile days. The most fertile period is usually in the days leading up to ovulation, making BBT tracking a helpful tool if you're trying to conceive.

It's important to note that while BBT tracking can provide valuable insights into your menstrual cycle and ovulation, it has limitations. BBT indicates that ovulation has occurred but does not predict when it will occur. Other fertility signs, such as changes in cervical mucus, can complement BBT tracking for a more comprehensive understanding of the menstrual cycle.
