Book Review of The Strong-Willed Child by Dr. James Dobson - Review by Author HAPruitt

This book was extremely helpful. My husband and I took in four foster kids, and they are all different degrees of strong-willed. In foster care, you are not allowed to spank or physically discipline in any way, and this book greatly helped us. It does not focus on spanking and does not promote child abuse. 

The book focuses on teaching caregivers why children are strong-willed and then teaching how to teach children to respect those caring for them.


Yes, surprisingly, Dr. Dobson does say to fight back against strong-willed children's attempts to take control, but Dr. Dobson explains that the fight should be less like a battle and more like the adult demonstrating that he/she is not going to let the child be the boss. I especially appreciated his example of how a judge demonstrates his authority; a judge simply tells the person on trial what they have done and what it will lead to and then gives the consequences. A judges does cry or scream or hit--he simply knows he has the authority to give consequences and calmly does.

I highly recommend this book to any parent who feels at a loss with a child trying to take control.
