Galveston reopens Gilley’s for one night at chamber event

Gilley’s is back. Well at least for one night in Galveston instead of Pasadena.

The honky tonk made famous in the “Urban Cowboy” movie, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its opening with its namesake Mickey Gilley and his famous collaborator Johnny Lee on stage for a special night Saturday (1/29/2022).

It was five decades ago that bar owner Sherwood Cryer teamed up with country star Mickey Gilley to create Gilley’s in Pasadena.

The club cemented itself in the national lexicon thanks to the movie Urban Cowboy.

The chamber worked recreating Gilley’s right down to its original bar menu.

That included performances from Johnny Lee and Mickey Gilley, a Dolly Parton look-alike contest and an Urban Cowboy character look-a-like contest.

Professional dancers from all over the country competed in a sanctioned dance contest.

There was mechanical bull riding, arcades, and even the farmed punching bag game.
