The Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha will make recommendations to the President, who would then designate the Chief Election Commissioner and other Elections Commissioners. This decision was made by the Supreme Court today. According to a five-judge constitution bench led by Justice K.M. Joseph, this panel shall be in effect until Parliament passes a statute to that effect. A number of petitions calling for reform in the selection of members of the Election Commission of India were being heard by the bench. The highest court underscored that the Election Commission must resist any attempts by the executive to subjugate it. The Supreme Court emphasised that the Election Commission must uphold the Constitution's provisions and act in a fair and legitimate manner.
