Step 2: Memorize

1. Flashcards
First, you study the sentence starters of your TOEFL integrated task template with the flashcards you have created. On the front of your flashcard you can see the keyword and on the back you can see the sentence starter. Using Anki flashcards makes memorizing the integrated task template incredibly easy. All you need to do is studying your cards every day. You do not need to think about which cards to study because Anki tells you what you need to study. It uses a method that is called spaced repetition. This means that new cards and cards that you find difficult are shown more often and cards that are easy for you are shown less often. This makes Anki a highly effective tool for your TOEFL preparation because you do not waste time studying things you already know and you do not forget your TOEFL template because Anki will show you the cards until you know them.

2. The Organization Sheet
Now let's imagine that you have studied your flashcards and you have memorized the sentence starters of your template. How do you know where you have to put them in your essay? It may still be difficult to organize them because the order of the sentence starters is not in your brain yet. You need to tell your brain how to organize them - to do this we use the Organization Sheet.

On the Organization Sheet you can see keywords. These are the keywords that are on the front of your flashcards. You now have to write down the sentence starter that you memorized. When you have filled out the entire Organization Sheet you have a look at your integrated task template and you check whether you got it right. You should repeat this until you are able to write down the whole template correctly. I recommend doing this regularly because it only takes a few minutes of your time and it is highly effective.

Why should you use the Organization Sheet?
It is really important that you know where you have to put your sentence starters because if you do not have an order in your head it may happen that you repeat words in your integrated essay. You can avoid this if you memorize an order. This will help you start every sentence in a different way and this will get you a high score in the integrated task in TOEFL Writing.

Step 3: The Progress Tracker
To track your progress you should use a progress tracker. It works like this: Every time you practice with your organization sheet, you put the date in the first column and then you evaluate your performance. In the video I explain how to do this. In the end you know exactly where you stand and you have a nice visualization of your memorization progress.
