George Pogosov, the Ukrainian Olympic saber fencing champion (Seoul, 1988, Silver; Barcelona, 1992, Gold) and six-time world champion, was orphaned at the age of three, raised by his grandmother, and lost himself in a world of literature and music. During a chance visit to a fencing club in his home city of Kyiv at 11-years-old, he was struck by the noble grace and rigor of the sport, stepped on to the piste and never left. He was first coached by Mikhail Shimshovich, and later David and Gennady Tyshler. In 1995, due to the unstable economic conditions in his home region, he and his family -- wife, Tanya, and daughter, Anna -- emigrated to the United States, where George began a new chapter of life and career by offering private fencing lessons. In 1999, he was enticed west, bringing his skills and imprimatur to Stanford University where he has served as co-head coach of the Cardinals for over 20 years, having trained future Olympic champions as well as many other talented young enthusiasts (including Steve Jobs' son, Reed.) These days, Pogosov's team regularly qualifies as among the top ten strongest student teams in the country. In his spare time he enjoys collecting autographs of famous writers, musicians and, of course, fencers and is the author of the bespoke book "A Legacy of Fencing". He frequently returns to his native Ukraine, where he is known for, among other things, his benevolent work with orphanages.
