In 1926 on its stage, for the first time the dance of Charleston was performed in Warsaw by Zula Pogorzelska (called the Polish Charleston Baby) in the revue “Pod sukienką” (Under The Skirt).

Here is another Charleston performed in this time by that orchestra - an international evergreen and jazz-classic “Yes Sir That’;s My Baby”. What surprises me is the insanely fast tempo the Charleston is played, but perhaps that’s exactly how it was danced in Poland, in 1926? During its rather short life between 1925-27 theatre “Perskie Oko” was very busy in promoting the newest trends in international pop-music, including the charlestons, black bottoms or innumerable foxtrots performed by the best Warsaw’s small stage actors: Zula Pogorzelska, Tadeusz Olsza, Konrad Tom, Halina Kamińska, Ludwik Lawiński, Marian Rentgen and many others. Yet, the expensive localization in Nowy Świat – in heart of prewar Warsaw’s nightlife – plus bad habits of “Perskie Oko” stars, who on the wave of enormous success started throwing money around, demanding still higher and higher wages, led the business to a bankruptcy in 1929 and transforming it into a new, more reasonable and long-lasting revue theatre “Morskie Oko”.

NOTE: Zula (Zofia) Pogorzelska (b.1896 in Epatoria, Crimea – d. in Wilno 1936) was a Polish cabaret and film actress. She was born to a Polish nobility family who until the Soviet Revolution of Oct 1917 lived in territory of the former Tzarist Empire (in Crimea) and later emigrated to Poland (Wilno). Zula Pogorzelska – who grew up to become a lively and temperamental flapper and a talented dancer and singer - was never accepted by her family as the rising star of Warsaw cabarets of the Roaring Twenties and her family ties were soon broken. Called the “Polish Charleston Baby” Pogorzelska was the first Polish performer to introduce the Charleston in Poland, she was also called the “owner of the most beautiful pair of legs” in Warsaw. Pogorzelska was the wife of popular Warsaw cabaret and film artist Konrad Tom (a.k.a. Konrad Runowiecki). Her sudden death – from a fast progressing rare disease (syringomyelia) which attacked her on stage, when she was dancing – buried Warsaw in mourning and for decades Polish stages could not enjoy a comedy personality equal to her talent.
