On the day the den burned down
Like bones exposed by hungry kiss
Flames that licked the branches bare
Devouring the sun dried moss

A slick of black runs through the trees
Where nature took insatiate course
Brisk in bloom was this spring clean
The bush and burn met fiery force

Making cinders of the leaves
That rose in reverence through the boughs
Carried on the final breath
The memories in smoke enshrouds

But then youth’s dream in vivid green
Bears forest back unto its source
Silent potence works unseen
And nature knows of no remorse

On the day the den burned down
From spark, to thought, and fond recall
Joy will adorn these trees once more
As little castles rise and fall
