Engraving a Dragon on a Damascus blade - Part 2

Ilya takes us through step by step of how he engraves a dragon on a custom damascus great sword. Engraving steel takes special steps. This is a series of videos showing engraving for beginners all the way to advanced as the videos progress. Although this is a skill that needs practice, you can clearly see the steps that need to be taken and hopefully this gives you a since of DYI and you start trying some of this on your own.

A weeks worth of evening engraving has gone on since part one of how to engrave a blade. Ilya has rough carved out most of the dragon on to the blade. Its now time to rough out the area under the arch where the flames meet the tail and then move on to adding detail all over the piece.

Ilya shows a technique of using a marker to darken the background to show depth and at the same time it helps remove glare from the bright cuts, while engraving steel, to aid the artist in know where to cut next.

Ilya also shows us how to use a scraper to get everything smoothed out and rounded over.
