Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1 is a debilitating chronic pain condition that is resultant of excessive/ramped up sympathetic tone. Many call this the "suicide disease". Many patients with TMJ/D issues have CRPS1 and don't even know it... The patient in this video has been dealing w/ CRPS1 for over 5 years. Dr. Nick helped to diagnose her, and watched her go through the many trials and tribulations; meds, treatments, surgeries, denials by physicians re diagnosis, etc. Importantly, her CRPS1 was triggered by a dental visit to her old dentist, who simply injected her to do a filling. From that point on, the trouble began. However. That injection was not causative... It was simply the inciting event/straw that broke the camels back. Many prior surgeries and accidents had set her up for the CRPS1. Sadly, most neurologists deny that CRPS1 happens in the head an neck region. That is untrue. Dr. Mark Piper, the world-renowned TMJ surgeon who shared patients with Dr. Nick for many years before he retired, helped to diagnose her. In Piper's 30 years of practice, approximately 1/3 - 1/4 of the "TMJ" patients that he saw ALSO had CRPS1. Dr. Piper worked for years alongside renowned neurologist and CRPS expert, Dr. H. Hooshmand, M.D.

Many thanks to this brave patient for allowing us to film this and publish the video online describing her harrowing journey that fortunately had a happy ending... Unusually, her damaged TMJ discs were mostly causative for her CRPS1 condition, and surgery at the Piper Clinic in St. Pete, FL actually was curative for her! Amazing story. No guarantees for those w/ head and neck CRPS1, but sometimes the orthopedic condition of ones TMJs COULD be causative for the CRPS1 condition.
