India’s land measurement system is a fascinating mosaic of diverse units-bigha, guntha, cent, kattha, and many more. But understanding land size across the country is complicated by the fact that these units vary not just regionally but sometimes even within a single district.

In this video, I introduce a unique data visualisation project that brings all these diverse land units together into one accessible place. By converting every unit into a common standard-square feet-it becomes easier to compare, understand, and appreciate India’s rich heritage of land measurement.

This project is a labor of love and collaboration. It aims not only to clarify numbers but also to preserve history and build an open resource for researchers, planners, lawyers, and anyone interested in how land was traditionally measured across India.

Despite the challenges of incomplete or inconsistent data-from places like Jharkhand where the size of a kattha varies widely-this data continues to grow with contributions from people who care.
