Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was killed in a gunman attack at an art exhibition on Monday in Ankara, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Karlov was shot as he was speaking at the opening of a photographic art exhibition titled "Russia through Turks' eyes".

According to witness at the site, the gunman suddenly rushed behind Karlov and shot, then Karlov fell to the ground. The gunman also shot at spectators at the site, according to a witness.

"He (the gunman) firstly pointed his gun to the ambassador, then turned his gun to us. We lay prone on the ground because of panic. I saw the gunman pointed his gun to the ceiling, and the ambassador fell down," said a witness.

The gunman was shot dead at the scene and identified as 22-year-old Turkish police officer Mevlut Mert Altintas who had been on duty for two and a half years at the riot police unit in Ankara, according to Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

Karlov was sent to hospital but died despite emergency rescue efforts. Other three people were also injured in the attack, one of them had left the hospital while the other two are still receiving treatment in the hospital. Karlov's wife is also in the hospital.

After the attack, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who offered to send security officers to Turkey for the investigation. He said both sides believe the attack is a public provocation aiming at destroying the relations between Turkey and Russia.

The gunman shouted "Don't forget Aleppo. Don't forget Syria," according to Turkish security sources.

The incident came one day before a tri-party meeting among the top diplomats of Russia, Turkey and Iran over the Syrian crisis scheduled for Tuesday in Moscow.

Born in 1954, Karlov has served as the Russian Ambassador to Turkey since 2013.
