Training a puppy can be difficult if you don’t know where to begin.

The first steps in training your brand new puppy is Building Engagement. For a second I want you to put yourself in your puppy’s paws. Since the moment you were born you’ve been with your mom, brothers, and sisters. There was also this kind couple that took care of you. Then, without warning, you were taken to your new home. You’re at least nine weeks old and your life just shifted unexpectedly. Where is my mom? My brothers and sisters? Who are these people?

Okay! You’re you again. Your new puppy has no idea who you are and because of that they don’t trust you. They’re in an unfamiliar environment with faces, voices, sounds, and smells that are foreign to them. But what do they know? Food is good.

To build engagement with your new puppy, start by feeding them from your hand. Take them to a controlled or semi controlled environment and let them be a dog. Don’t call them, don’t make noise to get their attention, don’t rush them. Wait patiently until they notice and want to explore you. Watch carefully. The moment they look at you, or in your direction, mark then reward with a bit of food that you feed them from your hand. Repeat this step for the duration of their meal time. They will begin to make a positive association with you that says, “when I’m with this person good things happen.”

Overtime, you will become more exciting than their surrounding environment. They will ignore everything else because they want to be around you. You have built a bond because you’ve earned their trust.
