November 21st, 2015. Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto squared off in a good old Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry.This is a highly anticipated match up between two very popular fighters; Cotto, a seasoned 15 year veteran and world champion in 3 weight divisions taking on the prime 24 year old Canelo was 2 time former World Light Middleweight Champion.

In this bout, the following titles were on line;

1) The vacant WBC Diamond Middleweight Championship.
2) The vacant WBC Middleweight Championship.
3) The Ring Middleweight Championship (2nd defense by Cotto).

Interestingly, on this very day 28 years ago another memorable Mexico vs Puerto Rico encounter took place between the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Edwin “Chapo” Rosario where Chavez Sr knocked out Rosario to win the WBA Lightweight Championship to become world champion in 2 weight divisions.

In June 2014, Cotto stops Sergio Martinez to win the WBC, The Ring, and Lineal Middleweight titles. With this victory, Cotto became a Triple Crown World Champion.

For his first defenses of his newly won Middleweight titles, he beat Daniel Geale via TKO4 in June 2015.

In March 2014, Canelo Alvarez bounced back from a one sided loss to defensive genius Floyd Mayweather Jr and scored a TKO10 victory over Alfredo Angulo. In July of the same year, he picked up another win; outpointing Erislandy Lara in a competitive albeit disputed SD.

In May 2015, Alvarez scored a huge KO over James Kirkland in devastating fashion.

His Knockout of the Year victory (as named by The Ring) sets up the Alvarez-Cotto Middleweight mega fight.

Going into the fight, several issues related to the WBC took place;

1) Miguel Cotto was stripped of his WBC Middleweight Title due to a dispute in sanctioning fees.
2) Gennady Golovkin was the next mandatory defense for Cotto’s WBC title, thus the WBC ruled that should Cotto beat Canelo the WBC title will be awarded to GGG instead.
3) Canelo Alvarez will be given 15 days to secure a fight deal with Golovkin should he win as the title is on the line only for him.

This fight lived up to expectations as both fighters had their moments, with great punches exchanged throughout 12 rounds with a number of close rounds. Interestingly, both fighters landed equal amount of punches after 7 rounds although Canelo arguably landed the more powerful blows (due to his natural size advantage).

While both fighters had their share of great moments in the fight, but Canelo significantly hurt Cotto with body shots and even cut his left eye in the championship rounds which contributed to his victory.

Canelo won via UD12 with scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111.

Since this fight, Cotto had remained inactive till now (as of May 2017) with several fight cancellations.

After this victory, Canelo successfully defended his newly won titles for the 1st time against Amir Khan (who moved up 2 weight classes); winning via a devastating right hand knockout in the 6th round. His knockout over Khan was named Knockout of the Year 2016 by Ring Magazine.

GGG was his next opponent as mandated by the WBC, but as the deadline to secure a fight deal was coming to a close Canelo in a surprising move, vacated the WBC title and proceeded to move down to Light Middleweight. However, Alvarez maintained he was still interested in negotiating a fight with GGG.

On 6th May 2017, Canelo Alvarez dominated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to win a lopsided UD. In the post fight, it was announced that an Alvarez-Golovkin megafight has been confirmed and it is scheduled for September this year!
