I use Hal Leonard's 'Guitar Method Book 1, 2, 3' to teach the fundamentals of music to beginner guitarists. I highly recommend this book if you need to work on your fundamentals, especially reading music.

Many guitarists question the value of reading music. But no one questions the value of learning to read. You wouldn't want to go through life illiterate, would you? A little time learning to read music will pay huge long term dividends in your music.

If you spend just 5 minutes a day going through this book, you will thank me later. Believe me.

My recommendation is to spend 5-10 minutes a day on the book, kind of like 'eating your vegetables'. A necessary, if not fun, part of learning guitar. (Apologies to vegetarians for this lousy metaphor. )

For the first week, practice only the notes on the high e string. Week 2, Then the b string. Week 3, the G string. Say the names of the notes aloud as you play them.

Soon you will be reading music well, and you will know all of the names of the notes in open position.

And you can use the rest of your practice time for more fun things, like songs and riffs!
