Beloved educator and Carnival enthusiast Janine Chin Choy has died

Tributes are pouring in following the passing of Ms. Janine Chin Choy, a long-serving Spanish teacher whose vibrant spirit and dedication left a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike.

Ms. Chin Choy served at El Dorado West Secondary School for approximately ten years and previously taught at Malick Secondary School. She was widely regarded as more than an educator, playing an integral role in school life and culture.

Known as the school’s unofficial media manager, Janine was ever-present at events, activities, and initiatives—capturing moments, promoting school spirit, and ensuring that achievements and memories were preserved.

Students and colleagues remember her for her upbeat personality, infectious energy, and genuine care for those around her. A proud Carnival baby, she fully embraced the culture of mas, music, and celebration, and was known for her deep love of Carnival.

Outside the classroom, Janine was also an active member of the Hydro Warriors, where she participated as a dragon boat paddler, demonstrating the same commitment and passion she brought to her professional life.

Her passing has left a profound void in the education community. Many have described her as a source of joy, encouragement, and inspiration whose influence will continue to be felt through the countless lives she touched.
