Thanks for checking into the channel! All my iron material comes from L.J. Smith stair systems, which for you in the Denver area, just head over to Alpine Millwork off of I70 and Tower Rd to get your baluster pattern for your home! You can also go to Lowes and Home Depot to find similar styles of iron balusters. DONT forget the iron boots, at least 1 per baluster. You can also add a boot to the top of each baluster for extra design!

When measuring the opening remember to add at least 1 1/2 inches (no more than 2) from the handrail to the material where the baluster finishes on top of.

I use the Dewalt 14” metal chop saw to cut all my iron balusters with. Use a stop of some sort so you don’t have to measure each and every baluster! REMEMBER to clean the cut edge of the baluster for easy installation later, you can also use a grinder or sand paper to clean the edge, just be very carful the metal can be sharp!

WIth the nub on top of the baluster I drill a 1/2 inch hole about 1 inch deep into the handrail. (If you are taking out old wood balusters, you already have a great hole to start with at the top most the time!)
On the bottom I drill a 11/16 hole about 2 inches deep or further into the floor, allowing me to slide the baluster down far enough to slide it up and still be recessed into the floor or material at the bottom.

NO GLUE!!!!!! Liquid nail, epoxy, or whatever other caulking may fail over time and cause the baluster to become loose or rattle when touched. Just by using a 1 1/4 drywall screw to secure the bottom, I promise you, use my technique and there will be no more issues! Maybe you use 2 or 3 screws to pinch the baluster, but much better than glue and a messy situation!

Finally the boot… the Allen key I used was a # 3 metric. You may vary in size depending on the style and brand of boot you purchase. Don’t over tighten the set screw on the boot and strip the screw on accident…just snug it tight so it is secure and leave it! BOOM!! Your done with a brand new baluster layout for your rail!
