Many kidney patients feel anxious when advised to undergo AV fistula surgery, often imagining it as a risky procedure involving pipes or major interventions. An arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula) is created for patients who are at the dialysis stage. It involves a simple surgical connection between an artery and a vein, typically in the arm. This connection enables efficient blood flow during dialysis without repeated needle trauma. Its design supports long-term use and significantly lowers the chances of infection compared to temporary access points.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗩 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗜𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗵

Permcath, though convenient in emergencies, poses higher risks in the long run—especially in warm or dusty conditions. It often leads to infections, fevers, and even life-threatening sepsis. In contrast, a matured AV fistula (usually after about 45 days) offers a much safer and more consistent option for ongoing dialysis sessions, as it does not involve any external foreign object.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Not all fistula surgeries succeed on the first attempt. In patients with weaker or thinner veins—like elderly individuals or some women—the procedure might face complications. The connection may fail to form properly or might get damaged during or after surgery. These are minor issues in most cases. Patients are advised to stay calm and work on improving kidney strength alongside medical care.
