Lamia was once a beautiful nymph, but the gods cursed her, transforming her into a serpent condemned to live in lonely isolation from human society. For years she exists in this monstrous form until the god Hermes offers her a bargain: help him find his own lost love, and he will restore her human form. She succeeds, and Hermes grants her temporary humanity, but she must use this borrowed time wisely, for the transformation may not last if her true nature is revealed. In her beautiful human form, Lamia encounters Lycius, a young Corinthian soldier, on a road near Corinth and she falls deeply in love with this mortal man. She uses her remaining powers of enchantment to seduce him, and Lycius is captivated by her beauty and mystery, knowing nothing of her serpent past. The painting captures this moment of desperate longing: Lamia kneels before the armored soldier, gazing up at him with intense yearning, while the iridescent shed snakeskin lies discarded among the forest floor—a hint of her true nature.

Lamia and Lycius live together in an enchanted palace she creates through magic, their love existing in a protected bubble separated from normal society. But when Lycius insists on marrying her publicly despite her protests, she agrees reluctantly, knowing that exposure to the mortal world threatens their illusion. At their wedding feast, the philosopher Apollonius recognizes Lamia's true nature and exposes her as a serpent-woman, she vanishes instantly, and Lycius, unable to bear the loss, dies of grief, proving that some loves are too magical, too impossible, to survive in the harsh light of reality.
