🐝🐝🍯 HONEYBEES come to the farm! Buying my first nucleus and populating my Autoflow Beehive 🍯🐝🐝

Greetings everyone and welcome back to the farm!!

Things are in a constant state of evolution at the farm, and last week I was very excited to check off an pretty significant project that I had planned for the 2023 summer season - BRINGING HONEYBEES TO THE FARM!! 🐝🐝

I started this project back in December with the purchase of an Autoflow Bee Hive kit from Amazon, and then proceeded to begin stocking up on all the ancillary supplies I would need (in addition to a few books, magazines and other goodies). The next big hurdle was to find a honeybee supplier near my location in Central New York, and I was excited to find that the owner of www.CNYBeekerSchool.com, Aran, was a supplier of honeybees. So way back in late January I put in my order, and Memorial Day Weekend finally rolled around which signifies honeybee pickup weekend in our area of NY.

In preparation of getting the bees I needed to build a pretty sturdy table out by my pond (which is where I decided they would live - they have the nicest view on the farm), hang some signs and do some site cleanup, and finally pick up the honeybees!

Bright and early on a Saturday, 5:30am to be exact, I picked up Megan and took a ride out to Skaneateles, NY. If you live in the CNY area and haven't ever been to Skaneateles, you're missing out - go take a trip! www.CNYBeekeeperSchool.com is owned by an awesome guy from Australia named Aran. He was incredibly helpful right from the start, and was eager to tell me everything I needed to know, even after we strapped the nucleus of bees down to the bed of my truck! Thanks Aran - it was an excellent experience!

Once we got the bees back to the farm, it was a surreal experience moving the frames from the nucleus into the hive I built. When bees come at you, every instinct screams at you to get away! When hundreds are swarming you and the buzz is so loud you can't hear anyone else talk, a bit of panic sets in and you simply have to calm down and focus on the task at hand. Thank goodness for the bee suit! Poor Megan, however, didn't have a bee suit (she does now though - LOL). Although she was about 30 feet away from the unboxing of the bees, a couple chased her down and she got a couple stings on the head. The wild running, arm swinging and screaming couldn't have had anything to do with it, I'm sure!! Hahahaha. 😂 Fortunately nobody is allergic to bees!

Anyway, I thought the entire process was fascinating and fun, and I'm thrilled that I actually checked something off the list for this year. There's a million other things that still need to be done, but at least this project as been accomplished. Now I just need to check in on them every week or so and make sure they're doing good (and remedy the situation if they're not)!
