His predecessor is known to be a resident of Baghdad. His grandfather Kitab Uddin settled in Magura via Bagerhat, Jessore. Garib Shah Dewan was born in the village of Magura Nauhata.

There are still rumors in the area that once Thomas Tweedy, the British government's indigo factory in charge, saw Hazrat Garib Shah on the banks of the local Hanu river while passing through Hajrapur in the area and thought he was a beggar and gave him a coin. But he took the coin and threw it into the river. Hazrat Garib Shah asked Thomas Tweedy to return the coin immediately. After a while, it was seen that his hand was full of innumerable coins. Tweedy understands his mistake and apologizes and accepts his discipleship.

As a child, he studied and worked as a shepherd at the house of Gagan Munshi in the same village. Many people in the area used to talk to the owner about Garib Shah. One late night Gagan Munshi lay in wait to watch him. As night fell, Gagan Munshi saw the boy Garib Shah leaving his bed and walking towards the Hanu river. He also followed her. He saw that Garib Shah performed ablution in the river, walked on the water with clogs, and went to the other side of the river. The next day he said to him, I am not your master from today. You don't have to do any work in this house. You just sit and eat and practice religion.

Once a guest will come to Garib Shah's house. His mother told him to catch some fish from the river. Garib Shah then cut bamboo from the bush and made a fishing prayer and kept it on the shore instead of in the river. Seeing this scene, his mother and the locals told him, that people do not get fish in the water, and how do you get fish on shore? In reply to this, Garib Shah said that even if fish could not be found in the river, fish could be found on this shore. The next morning it was seen that those who had left the river to receive prayers did not have fish in a single prayer while many fish were stuck in the prayers of poor Shah Dewan. In addition, people are still talking about miraculous powers, such as fishing for prayers on trees, walking on rivers, stopping cholera, and taming wild animals.

Another miracle can be heard from the mouths of the people of the area. Fayez Uddin, a zamindar in the Belgachhi area of ​​Faridpur, once sought refuge in Garib Shah Dewan for a murder charge. At this time he was bathing in the river Hanu. Fayez Uddin then tried to step on Garib Shah. He understands everything by saying that he has supernatural powers and avoids him in the guise of snakes, crocodiles, and tigers. Helpless Fayez Uddin is stubborn. He did not leave the area under any circumstances and hoped for grace. In the end, with the blessings of Garib Shah, he was freed from danger.
