It can take seconds to minutes for a soul to cross over after death. However, in general, 7–10 days. This is because, it is said that the person’s spirit wants to stick around to make sure their families are doing OK, or to watch their funeral services, or something else. Once the spirit crosses over, it can exert its own free will to move back and forth between worlds. There are some souls who remain earthbound for several reasons. One could be that the person doesn't realize they’re dead. This can happen when someone dies suddenly in an accident, murder, or suicide.
There are others who are just stubborn and want to stay back to settle a grudge or some other sort of resentment. There are people who are trained in helping a wandering or lost soul to cross over. A recent example of souls not wanting to cross over is the tragic implosion of the submersible Titan on 6/18/23. The 5 people on board were killed instantly in the accident.
Only one wanted to stay. The other 4 wanted to go into the Afterlife. The last explorer finally agreed, and they all went through the veil into the Afterlife at the same time.
