Thrilling Subrahmanya-Sakleshpur Ghat Section Train Journey: India's Steepest Broad Gauge Railway!

Ascending from 120 meters above sea level at Subrahmanya Road to a whopping 950 meters above sea level at Sakleshpur in 55 kilometers, this is the Shiradi Ghat section on South Western Railway in Karnataka state of India. By altitude, this is the steepest broad gauge ghat section of Indian Railways. The ruling gradient here is 1 in 50 which is not as steep as the Bhor, Braganza and Thull Ghat sections which have a 1 in 37 grade but those sections are not as long or have as much altitude gain as this ghat section.

There are 55 tunnels and several bridges in between and landslides are common during the monsoon season, making it one of the most difficult railway lines to maintain. The forest around the tracks is also home to wild elephants and frequent warning boards can be sighted beside the tracks. Watch more:
