In November 2025, a big row broke out in Tamil Nadu over a hilltop in Thiruparankundram near Madurai. Madras High Court Justice G.R. Swaminathan ruled that Hindus can light the traditional Karthigai lamp on an ancient stone pillar (called Deepathoon) right next to a Muslim dargah. The judge said the pillar originally belonged to the famous Subramanya Swamy temple and had been taken over over the centuries. The DMK government refused to follow the order, saying it could spark communal riots. They banned gatherings and rushed to the Supreme Court. Many DMK leaders and activists accused Justice Swaminathan of caste bias and demanded he be removed from his post. Supporters of the judgment argue he simply restored historical and religious rights.
The fight has turned into a larger debate: should Indian courts stick strictly to modern laws and secularism, or can they draw from ancient “Sanatana” ideas of justice?
