"Coach Tev, is my new favorite artist this year….and I’m about over 5+ years late."

If you had told me that COTY (Coach of the Year) by Coach TEV was the BEST hip hop record to come out in 2019, it wouldn’t be hard to believe you. The year 2019 wasn’t a horrible year for music, but it didn’t leave me with a mind-blowing album that had endless replay value. Truth be told, I can barely name a handful of 2019 albums that I actually go back to (IGOR and CrasH Talk are the two exceptions).

It wasn’t until the Dallas P!mp and hip hop guru, @joshstillpimpin had put me on to Coach Tev that I had realized what I’ve been missing out on.

Coach Tev isn’t your regular artist—he’s lethal, braggadocious, entrepreneurial, motivational, and intentional. He’s like Method Man of Irving, Texas. He’s the Kendrick Lamar of Larry Junes. The Baby Keem of Curren$ies. None of those comparisons actually make any sense, but they’re not really supposed to. Tev is in a lane of his own with his groovy flows, unpredictable pockets, and creative storytelling. He stays true to himself, slides on every beat, and makes music for almost every occasion.

All of this is showcased throughout COTY, Coach Tev’s extended play. October 12th marked the official celebration for COTY’s 5-Year Anniversary, and show (and everything leading up to it) was groundbreaking.

Leading up to the show, Coach Tev brought in a brand new rollout for his EP. From the self-recorded interviews in black & white to his Kobe Bryant & Kanye West commercial remake with Dallas mogul, Meka Jackson, Tev seriously made this project feel brand new and refreshing. Somehow, by forming a brand new story for COTY, he was able to make a five-year-old extended play feel like it came out in 2024.

Throughout this interview, Coach Tev recaps the show, goes down memory lane, and talks about how COTY didn’t even have a real concept to begin with.
