An EPZ, or Export Processing Zone, is essentially a customs zone where anybody can import various goods free of duty fees, including plants, machinery, and equipment to prepare different types of export products. EPZs provide free-trade conditions, streamlined documentation and registration processes, and long-term tax holidays. Most EPZs are established near seaports, airports, and border areas because they are convenient for global trade. Manufacturing activities can be conducted by any local and foreign company or individual for export to duty-free import purposes. Bangladesh has established 8 EPZs under its Zones Authority, also known as BEPZA, and 100 other economic zones. In a referendum of Bepza, the country's total exports from its EPZs since the establishment of 2020 amounted to 81 billion dollars. Before the epidemic, over 500,000 people were employed in the EPZs.
