A playthrough of Taito's 1991 action-platformer for the Sega Genesis, Saint Sword.

In this video, I play through both loops on the normal level, finishing with the true final boss and ending. The second loop begins at 24:49.

The sorcerer Gorgan has summoned an army of demons to flood the earth with evil, and on humanity's behalf, a king has asked you - St. Sword Macress the Titan - to save everyone with your ancient magic.

Saint Sword is a hack-and-slash platformer from Cyclone System, the criminally underrated development studio behind NES games like    • Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode (NES) Playthr...   and    • WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth (...  , that came out at exactly the wrong time to leave any impact whatsoever. It was released a week after the Sonic the Hedgehog and a month ahead of Streets of Rage.

Each of the game's eleven stages is a mini labyrinth full of enemies, one of which is carrying a key that's needed to unlock the exit. Macress can upgrade his armor and attack levels by hitting score thresholds, enemies drop powerups that allow him to temporarily assume the form of an angel, a centaur, or a merman, and defeating bosses gives him access to a wide range of MP-consuming spells.

Macress's abilities give you the leeway to decide how you want to tackle each stage, and the variety leaves a good amount of room for experimentation. The gameplay is simple but satisfying, and the controls, while a bit stiff, feel good. Like many early Genesis games, it feels like a beefed up 8-bit platformer, but it's one that's well-made and fun.

The graphics and sound aren't pushing any boundaries, either, but they're excellent for a 1991 game that shipped on a four-megabit cart. The animation is often awkward and stilted, but the art direction gives the game a lot of personality, the backdrops are nicely detailed, the sprites are large (and often creepy), and the music is moody and memorable.

It doesn't pose much of a challenge, but for the short time it lasts, Saint Sword is a thoroughly enjoyable action romp. I loved it.

(If only Rastan Saga II had played more like this!)
